ONI releases updated social media filtering map

The OpenNet Initiative is proud to announce the release of its newly updated social media filtering map, which displays the states and regions around the world where some of the most popular social media websites are censored. In the past few years, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have caught the attention of governments, especially with respect to activists in authoritarian countries who use these sites for political campaigning and social advocacy. Based on testing conducted in 2008-2009 and further monitoring of Herdict and media reports in 2010, the OpenNet Initiative has compiled data on the most frequently blocked social media sites around the world. The map serves as a graphical representation of ONI's research results, depicting the states and regions where filtering of Facebook, Flickr, Orkut, Twitter and YouTube occurs.
